A very successful and enjoyable part of the year 9 Humanities curriculum is the annual “Celebrating Diversity Day” in which pupils learn about themselves, others and the world around them using imagination and creativity in their learning. The day encourages interest in exploring, improving understanding and of showing respect for different faiths and cultural diversity in general.
In this activity groups of pupils carry out research into an assigned country; food is prepared and sampled on the day! Stalls are set up in a ‘market place’ layout promoting each country and the pupils are judged by visitors from the wider community on people and their cultures.
Pupils learn to understand and appreciate the range of different cultures within school and further afield that have shaped their own heritage and those of others. This day contributes towards the preparation for an understanding about fundamental British values that are the basis for life in modern Britain. In addition, there is a celebration of the world community which promotes an awareness of our global citizenship roles with respect to tolerance and respect.
The assessment criterion focusses upon places and cultures of the pupils’ focus countries. Throughout the day each country group send members to take part in humanities challenges, which contribute to the overall results.
