Careers Vision

There has never been a time when career guidance has been as important for young people as it is today. The landscape of education, training and employment opportunities that students need to navigate is more complex and more challenging than that faced by previous generations. The raising of the age for participating in learning means that young people face a wide range of choices of courses and places to study.

At Alder Grange we have a set of values which underpin all that we do, expecting pupils at all times to be Ready, Respectful and Responsible. For us, career education is more than merely meeting our statutory requirements; it is about ensuring that we truly prepare our pupils to become responsible and highly employable members of society.

We understand that students need help to make choices and manage transitions; to do this effectively they need good quality careers education, information, advice and guidance.  Our school Careers Plan sets out how we provide a careers programme which will provide our students with the knowledge, inspiration and ability to take ownership of their own career action plans which will enable them to succeed in their chosen career paths.  We make sure that we are achieving these aims by measuring performance against the Gatsby Benchmarks, ensuring that all eight are being fully implemented.

We know however, that at home you will be keen to encourage your child to think about the career opportunites available for their future. In order to assist you with this, we have provided some links below to showcase some very useful information resources about future study options and current labour market opportunities.

Online Support

Each year, all pupils receive an invite to join the Careers Hub (https://classroom.google.com/u/0/c/MjU5MTAzMDc0NTI1?cjc=cqte4jn) on Google Classroom (invite code: cqte4jn). This gives pupils a huge amount of information and support when planning their future. They will find links to local training providers, upcoming opportunities for work experience, support with applications and links to further support should they need it.

Start Profile (https://lancashire.startprofile.com/page/home-page) is a website designed to help young people learn more about the opportunities open to them in their local area and support them in making informed career choices. Pupils can register to create an account on the website, allowing them to access tools to assist in finding the right path for themselves and also assist in making applications.

Apprenticeships

For some of our pupils the opportunities provided through an apprenticeship will be worth consideration after leaving our school. Apprenticeships have changed significantly over the last few years and are currently developing at a rapid pace. From level 2 (intermediate) up to level 7 (masters) there are a range of different apprenticeship standards available for the vast majority of job roles.

Find out more about the opportunities available here:

Apprenticeships allow you to combine work and study by mixing on-the-job training with classroom learning. You’ll be employed to do a real job while studying for a formal qualification, usually for one day a week either at a college or a training centre. By the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll hopefully have gained the skills and knowledge needed to either succeed in your chosen career or progress onto the next apprenticeship level.
