The Prevent Strategy is a national government initiative aimmed at preventing people from being drawn into terrorism or supporting extremist ideologies. It applies to all forms of extremism including political, religious, and far-right ideologies and is part of the Government’s wider counter-terrorism strategy known as CONTEST.

At Alder Grange, Prevent is not simply about discussing extremism; it si aboout building resilience in our pupils by promoting tolerance, mutual respect, and understanding. These values underpin both British Values and our school ethos helping our young peopel to become respectful, informed, and responsible citizens.

Since July 2015, all schools have a statutory duty to safeguard pupils from radicalisation and extremism under the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act (2015).

At Alder Grange, this means we;

  • Protect pupils from extremist and violent views in the same way we protect them from drugs, exploitation, or gang involvement.
  • Provide a safe space for discussion, enabling pupils to explore controversial issues and learn how to stay safe both online and in the community.
  • Promote democarcy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance through every aspect of school life.
  • Exploring different cultures and faiths through the curriculum and assemblies to promote understanding and respect.
  • Challenging prejudice, discrimination, and racist language whenever it occurs.
  • Developing pupils’ critical-thinking skills so they can question information, online content, and peer influence.
  • Prmoting positive identity and belonging, ensuring every pupil feels valued and part of our community.
