English Language | English Literature

Curriculum Intent
At Alder Grange we view English as an essential tool for success in today’s society. Spoken and written English helps to develop the individual. They are essential for accessing the curriculum as a whole and a sound command of English contributes towards overall confidence, comprehension and future success.
The English Department’s vision for every ‘Alder Granger’ is clear and simple: to ensure that all pupils at Alder Grange are able to:
discover and develop their knowledge and passions: It is our vision to ignite passion and enjoyment in our pupils and to promote English and English Literature as enjoyable subjects that have a clear relevance to pupils’ individual experiences and interests. We harness current events and texts that have a ‘real world’ impact on our learners, in order to develop their thirst for knowledge and desire to be active members of society.
access an inclusive broad range of subjects: Our courses are designed around relevant, interesting and diverse texts, ranging from classical prose and poetry to modern teenage fiction; broadsheet newspapers to witty travel writing; Greek mythology to current affairs. At all key stages, there is a clear and explicit focus on vocabulary in order to furnish our pupils with the skills and tools to access the English curriculum, and indeed other curriculum areas, confidently and competently.
be prepared for the future: We believe it is imperative that young people have both the ability to form their own, reasoned ideas and views of the ever changing world that surrounds them. It is crucial that tomorrow’s generations consist of those who are able to separate fact from fiction; real news from ‘fake’ news and opinion from actuality. We aim to expose students to an eclectic range of materials, furnishing them with the transferrable skills required in final examinations but also to instill a love of literature that will stay with them for a lifetime.
be good citizens: Our pupils will learn to write persuasively, informatively and for entertainment purposes. They will use their imaginations to create exciting works of fiction, or their knowledge of language and structure to write and deliver convincing arguments. Ultimately though, it is our goal to pass on our passion and love of English to our pupils so that they too can become enthusiastic readers, writers and speakers who grow into informed citizens adept at critical thinking and problem solving.

European Languages
French | German | Spanish

Curriculum Intent
The European Languages Department value all pupils as individuals and recognise that they are all capable of achieving success which comes in innumerable forms. It is our aspiration that our pupils will develop an interest and curiosity in other languages and cultures, progressing gradually into confident, resilient and independent learners.
We are aware of the need to support all pupils through their foreign language learning journey at Alder Grange and the importance of creating a non-threatening learning and teaching environment, expecting pupils to learn from their mistakes. We show interest in all Alder Grangers to establish positive relationships and we take account of pupil voice to inform our planning and provide active, challenging and enjoyable learning experiences.
The intent of the European Languages Curriculum at Alder Grange aims to ensure that all pupils at Alder Grange are able:
to access an inclusive broad range of topics – by making the teaching and learning themed around real topics and global world issues and by using authentic materials such as stories and films, we endeavour to make all language work relevant to all pupils, accessible, enjoyable and aimed at ensuring their success, whatever their level of ability.
to discover and develop their knowledge and passions – our Department is dedicated to promote consistency and high standards to engender a positive approach to language learning which will allow pupils to either become passionate linguists or simply appreciate the value of a culturally diverse society. The department contributes to the development of the whole child by enabling all pupils to develop confidence though appreciating their ability to cope with the unfamiliar, make progress and achieve. We intend to equip our more capable and keen linguists with all the necessary vocabulary, knowledge of phonics, explicit use and understanding of grammar, manipulation of more complex structures for the rigorous demands of the GCSE examinations, further language learning and study or work in other countries. For our pupils who are less interested in languages, we seek to foster attitudes and develop other skills which will teach them to communicate and to understand others, assimilate new information and deal with it efficiently, as well as be self-disciplined and demonstrate perseverance.
to be good citizens – the work of our department is also dedicated to the promotion of communication and understanding of cultural differences between our pupils and people of other nations. By providing them with an opening to other cultures, we help our pupils acquire mutual respect, tolerance and good relationships between persons of different countries and ethnic groups, whilst preparing them for a globalised world of work and equipping them with the skills to work in a variety of cultural contexts.
to prepare them for the future – Ultimately, our aim is that our pupils will understand that European Languages can open up wider horizons and make them more open and adaptable to new experiences to become responsible citizens who will make positive contributions to society and their communities. We also ensure that by the time they leave our school, Alder Grangers will know the French or Spanish word for geese.
The European Languages Curriculum at Alder Grange strive to encourage all our pupils to take pride in their linguistic achievements whilst building on their literacy, study, numeracy, creative and social skills. Through learning a foreign language at Alder Grange, our pupils will develop fundamentally important and transferable skills, contributing to pupils’ achievement in the wider school curriculum areas:
- linguistic and literacy skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing
- study skills: observing, detailing, interpreting, learning, organising

Curriculum Intent
The science curriculum intent aims to help pupils make pertinent links between what they learn in science lessons and the real world. The curriculum endeavours to expose pupils to relevant contexts and applications to the theory they study and where possible these should stem from a local/regional setting. Teachers in the department recognise that great teachers don’t just teach their subject, they teach and use the language of the expert.
Our Science Curriculum intent aims to ensure that all pupils at Alder Grange are able to:
Access an inclusive broad range of topics – Schemas are used to populate our Schemes of work and make best use of the children’s time. This includes establishing the fundamental components of topics and the order they need to be covered, as well as informing which topics make up the taught and which make up the learned curriculum.
Discover and develop their knowledge and passions – The curriculum encourages engagement in practical activities whenever possible in the form of both whole class activities and teacher demonstrations. Time in lessons is ring-fenced to deliver the essential skills scientists require and the department sees this aspect of science as important as exam board theory. Where opportunities arise, STEM ambassadors are brought into school to compliment the work undertaken in lessons.
Be prepared for the future –When this curriculum intent is implemented, the result should be that pupils are inspired to be the best that they can be and find that they have started paving the way for a potential career in STEM should this be the path that they want to choose.
Be good citizens – The department recognises its role in delivering the whole school cross curricular themes, especially given the unique moral and social responsibilities bestowed upon the field of science and the importance of science in the wellbeing of people and nature.
